SAM Electronics

Appendix 1
Published Characteristics

        To oversimplify greatly, the present-day product line of SAM Electronics comprises only two radars, the already-obsolescent Radarpilot 1000, and the Radarpilot 1100. That oversimplification lies in the thematic variations:

Each system has two X-band transceivers and one S-band transmitter;

There are two distinct X-band antennas; and

There are two distinct antenna drive-motors for some antenna/transceiver combinations,

- in all, 20 distinct possible configurations. Furthermore, since some antennas may be driven by either 50 Hz or 60 Hz power supplies, they may exhibit either of two possible scan rates. Their characteristics are tabulated as follows:

 Table 1 cross-indexes PD values with pulse-rate values. For ease of documentation, this table also includes a column for RF and another for peak power. The following points should be borne in mind when interpreting this data:

    • RF values are not published for any of these systems. The values provided are assumed, based on manufacturer specification of RF band (X or S). This contradicts fragmentary information on earlier X-band Atlas models, where an RF of 9375 MHz was specified; the difference may seem small, but it should be remembered that magnetrons exhibit considerable drift over their life cycles.
    • Where a pulse-rate of 500 Hz is indicated in the table, this applies only to variants with slower-rotating antenna systems, i.e. not those governed by IMO regulations on high-speed craft.

♦ Table 2 cross-indexes antenna rotation rates with antenna physical and electromagnetic characteristics. The following should be noted:

    • In instances where rotation rates are hyphenated, this should be read as discrete values reflecting differences arising from power-supply frequency.
    • In instances where multiple, dissimilar rotation rates are given, this reflects differences in scan for non-HSC and HSC installations.
